Community Resilience Starts With You

In June 2021, Detroit declared a state of emergency due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains, affecting over 30,000 people. This incident is the most recent example of an extreme weather event in Michigan.

Discover the unique challenges Detroit is confronting and learn how you can actively participate!

The goal is for us to change the way we support community members while helping to foster beautiful relationships between youth and the outdoors.

What Does R.E.A.D.Y Stand For?

This program focuses on Recreation, Education, Awareness, Demonstration, and Youth. It is an opportunity to engage in outdoor recreation and the natural environment while supporting residents of Detroit in becoming more flood resistant.

  • Through this program, members will have an opportunity to be introduced to the outdoor environment and will engage in local recreational activities designed to increase their ease and comfort outdoors, while fostering their appreciation of nature.

  • Members will be engaged in experiential hands-on learning to strengthen their understanding and support their engagement with community residents.

This can look like learning tailored to understanding the increased flooding, & waste reduction.

  • Through outreach efforts, community members and AmeriCorps members will have greater awareness of the local environment, city service providers, regulating authorities to contact with public health concerns, and local organizations to connect with for volunteerism.

  • Members assist with improving hazard awareness through the use of measurement instrumentation. Members will conduct a Total Home Safety Assessment (THSA).

The results of this assessment will educate community members about mold sampling, and flood prevention. Then members will intervene to help decrease the risk of flooding, mold, and other hazards.

  • In addition to the recreational exposure, R.E.A.D.Y will increase members’ exposure to Detroit’s job network, and available internships.
